To keep it short & sweet, I seek a storage solution that will allow me to have removeable drive racks for IDE & SATA drives that can then be inserted into some sort of similiar rack enclosure to allow porrtability via either FIREWIRE 400/800 or USB 2.0. I trying to avoid needing to use multiple products (I.e. Drive racks, remove drive and insert into a firewire /USB enclosure. Does anything like this exist? I am currently using Vantec EZSWAP racks (SATA and IDE) and other types of different USB/FIREWIRE enclosures. Just looking to standardize and streamline.

It's not hard to find 5.25" USB enclosures. They're meant for CD-Rom drives of course, but a lot fo them list hard drive support as well. I'd think you could just stick a drive cage into one.
The catch is that based on a quick search @ NewEgg this really only works for PATA. I couldn't find any 5.25" SATA enclosures regardless of USB or FireWire interface.

I see your point but I am looking for a solution that is designed for this purpose. I am sure it's out there and I could go all SATA external enclosures to get the speed I seek in a mobile solution but the need to run SATA cables is kind of limiting and restrictive.

how about this?`

Would something like this work for you? I've been looking into buying one of these for quite some time. They're all over ebay usually and I'm just trying to justify the expense. Most of them you can add removable hard drive bays directly into the unit. I've got a link to a better seller at home, but this was the best I could do from my mother's house. Good Luck!
