Hmm, new box, new problem

Post by CaterpillarAssassin »

Lousy thing keeps kicking out of games. The game just closes with no warning, nothing. Temps are running at a cool 41C under full load and at about 31C Idle. Just updated all drivers and it didnt help. Primarily the problem is in Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. 3dMark 2003 runs fine and I ran prime95 all night witout a hitch.

Shuttle AN35N Ultra (nforce2)
Athlon XP 2000+
512mb PC2700 (runnign at 333mhz)
Radeon 9600Pro 256mb
Seagate 40gb HD (from his old comp)
Onboard Sound
Windows XP Pro SP2
Rosewill case w/
350w rosewill Power Supply (suspect?)

those shuttle boards can be finickey. I've got on here.

did you try upping the voltage on the ram or the cpu, just a smidge ?

I've never used a Rosewill power supply, but if you go in your bios and see if there is any significant droop in power then that may be your problem.

What video driver you running? The problem you describe happens with several games using the latest 4.10 Catalyst drivers. Recommend you use the 4.9 as it's rock stable: http://www.ati.com/support/products/rad ... ivers.html

FP, the machine is using the latest catalyst from ATI's website. I bumped the CPU voltage up a hair from 1.65v to 1.675 and its working great now. We'll see if it stays that way. I'm gonn ahave to do some intensive game "testing" tonight :D

Thank you both for your help.

Cat I would HIGHLY recommend you use the 4.9 Cats instead of the new 4.10. There's known issues with Quake3, Call of Duty and others. Practically any game that uses punkbuster is affected.

I really don't know why ATI hasn't pulled the drivers yet. I couldn't play Call of Duty at all - it would crash 5 minutes after starting the game.

Maybe I will then. Thats pretty odd that they wouldnt pull them if they caused so many problems. I'll revert as soon as I get some time. Thanks for the link, BTW
