Disk crash my ass. More like manufacturing defect. That oxide just fell off the drive, maybe due to heat (thinking about that blue ooze), but that should NOT happen.
If it was a head crash we're talking MAJOR malfunction, and someone let the drive sit there and grind away at the platters for endless hours or days before shutting it down. I just find it hard to believe that the head could track across the entire platter like that and scrape away THAT much oxide without the drive going into a protection mode, or the damn head just grinding off.

True..... and I agree taht it must have literally "fallen" off the drive as opposed to being ground away.

Wow. My IBM Deathstar 40 gig drive still works, and it's over 3 years old. Never had a problem with the drive, but I did have a HD cooler mounted underneath the drive during it's use.

Yeah, I was wondering if it was normal for hard drives to have so much "dust" on the inside. Seems like that's disaster waiting to happen...

They usually are metal... I was wondering about that. Maybe some are glass now? Would make for a smoother surface than metal I would think.

plus, when the glass ones get wiped clean you can use them for portholes in your boat or replacement windows for your old Studebaker!
