wireless network for neighbors
wireless network for neighbors
any recommendations on how to share wireless with neighbors? i've only searched briefly and hardware to do building-to-building wireless is around $700+ (3Com units). curious if anyone has done this and how much it ended up costing? i just thought it would be cool to share out to local neighbors (and split costs, etc) that are nearby. distances are maybe 100 meters or so from house-to-house. trenching cable isn't an option.
Have a compusa nearby?

Great prices on those belkin wireless routers and usb adapters. IF the rebates come in. But, that sale ends saturday.
If it isn't in line of sight, you'd probably need range extenders. Unless you are real close.
*Those are "b", the new "g" versions are suppoose to extend further. Good priced at wal mart.

yeah...i'll definitely need powered antennas of some sort to get across the street. my little 'ol d-link router can't push quite that hard.
a little point-to-point antenna would be cool...then pop into a router/switch on their end and boom...done. just need to find cheap solutions, if there is such a thing.
thanks!

Hmm, you can also buy wireless antennea as well. You can put one on your ap, mounted say just inside the house, and then run the antennea outside the house to say under the front porch roof.
Your neighbor should just be able to put an antennea on their card and get it away from the interference from the computer and they should get a signal. The B standard is supposed to get better range then the G standard, although it is slower. The G stuff is supposed to be backwards compatible with the B stuff as well.
You can use an antennea inside a coffee can, and mount that and point it across the street. However, you will have to mount it high enough to you don't loose line of sight whenever a semi runs past.
One more thing, when you set this up, make sure you assign a password. You can have like usually 4-5 passwords on a system, so you can assign passwords to different neighbors and when they don't pay, you can pull their access by deleteing their password. Or you can set it up with allowible access to only certain mac addresses as well. Depends on the model and such, but most have both built in.
Just saying this so point out to make sure the network is secure.....
Oh, look on-line for stuff. I buy stuff sometimes from Best Buy or someplacee similar, check it out and if the price is low enough on-line after I decided I want it, I buy it on-line and return the old one.
Let us know how it turns out. Best of luck.

Still have them if your intrested. you could mount one in each house, in the attic pointing at the others house, and put an AP up by it with one antena hooked to the long range and the other just on it for in the house. Would work great! rndmtask and myself were war driving with them and picked up all sorts of stuff with them, and they are verry directonial.
A set will do it with no problem as long as the AP or whatever can be hooked to it. Hell they even come wiht GAS arestors so if you decide to mount them on the roof lightning wouldn't be an issue.
Let me know what you want to do. You wouldent need an amp if all your doing is going across the street if you use theise antennas.

All you've got to do is set up a point-point or point-multipoint network between 2 or more WAPs. I had to install several such wireless connections over the summer at my job. We used only linksys WAPs and had no problem with one wap talking to another wap about 150-200 ft away without any additional equipment, antennas, etc. The WAPs were set up in different buildings, and we never had any problems.
Can't... part of the deal i have. Thats why i get to sell all this to you at such low prices. If i put them on ebay at this price sombody would get mad and then i wouldent have all the neat stuff to sell any more.
