Go to your HDD manufacturer's website and download their diagnostic utiility. Most of them have a Quick diagnostic and a thorough one. Run the thorough one (it'll take a while). If it doesn't detect any problems then it's not your hard drive. You have another problem.
If it does detect a problem it MAY offer to try to fix it. Sometimes this works if it's just a damaged cluster.
On the other hand the diagnostic may tell you that the drive is shot. In which case you'll need the error code it generates to request an RMA warranty replacement from the manufacturer. You can usually go to the manufacturer's support web site and enter the drive's serial number to find out if it's under warranty, and request an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization).
You can request an Advanced RMA which means they'll rush you out a new drive via 2 day Air (you'll need to give them a credit card number just to quarantee you return the old drive). When the new one arrives you can use the manufacturer's diagnostic software, or Norton Ghost, to copy the data to the new drive. Then ship the old drive back in the same box the new one came in. It'll cost you maybe $8 to UPS the old drive back (and I WOULD recommend UPS so you have a tracking number and proof of delivery).
There are other possibilities, but you need to eliminate the HDD first. It's the likeliest culprit.
