So last night I installed the 802.11b card on my shuttle and I saw 3 networks, one was mine, one was locked down so I couldnt get in. But the 3rd one, COMPLETELY unloced. I got on and got on the net, but that is not all.... I got into the router config, default IP address and default password.....

I didn't mess with any settings on the router but really wanted to :P

Seen that in many different places, friends apartment and such. All of the ones I've tried are default username and password for the router config pages. I didn't mess with anything though.

Yep, tons of open wifi everywhere I am sure.

One reason you will find many probably is the fact Wifi routers like my lynksys do both cat5 and wifi connections and cost about the same as a plain cat5 router. I don't have wifi runing at home, but I have a wifi router. It does the same (plus more) that my cat5 router does.

I bought mine because I was playing with wifi and an ISp at my office, I have lan connection to the net on cat5 but I was testing and playing with thier wifi too for awhile. I swapped routers since then, took in the cat5 to the office and brought home the Wifi. I bet I am also running an open system here since I am not using the wifi at all and never disabled it in the router settings either. I might have it off or locked since I was using it at the office to begin with, I never checked since bringing it home what my settings are. I was going to play with wifi at home but haven't had time.
I am in the middle of nowhere though, I dought you could access my systems unless you actually pulled up the driveway and sat near the house, in which case I would shoot you anyway :D

Basically I think we will be seeing this happening alot in the near future as a Cat5 and Wifi/cat5 routers get closer in price. Many people not running wifi will buy the routers for future expansion options, then connect cables only and never read the manual!! They don't even know they are running wifi by defualt!
At least I do have all my Pcs passworded and such (many people don't) so about all anyone could get into probably would be the Wifi router settings I ain't using anyway. And I don't have my net connection shared either, enough trouble removing the unwanted junk from one pc why get the trash on all of them?
