No Sound

I had this happen before but I can't remember how to fix it. I do recall it was something simple (?)
I am using Windows XP Pro.
I had a corrupted C:\windows\system32\config\system file
I used Recovery Console to fix it.
(The last time it was a virus and had to format the HD)
I had to re-install my drivers (Video, Sound Card, Monitor, Printer, etc...)
Now it looks like there should be sound but nothing is coming out.
It acts like there is sound playing - No errors.
All connections are intact - They were re-checked.
There are no restore points. - It was turned off to clean the virus?
I went through the Windows trouble-shooting guide and nothing worked.
Device is enabled, No conflicts, System volume is not muted.
Any ideas?
Like I say it happened a month or so ago but I can't remember how I fixed it - I tried for 3 days and can't remember what I did that worked. But I do know it isn't a hardware problem. Might be Bios, or drivers, or settings.
Please let me know if you have any ideas.
Thanks
