PLC--or broadband over power line.

Providers claim throughput speeds of between 500 kilobits per second and 3 megabits per second, on a par with DSL and cable, but say they can sell the service for $30 per month, less than the $50 per month that DSL and cable users typically pay.

They've been working on this technology for many years now. Maybe someday this will finally move out of the world of "theoretical" and into the world of "actual".

it never will.. the noise and what not it makes interferes with ham and millitary radios. so it will never happen unless something changes.

It's likelier to be used commonly in Europe than it is here. The problem here is that we use step-down transformers on the poles (more efficient), in Europe they put the transformers all at sub-stations.
Radio signals can't pass through a transformer so they have to put a capacitor across every transformer, and that gets costly with the design of our power grids here.
However I understand that in some areas the cost is manageable.

so where as in ameiraca we have 4.7 KV up to the pole infront of the house and then a transformer to 208/220.. they have a sub statin that has 4.7 or what ever going into it and a HUGE 220/440 transformer and then that goes back up to the poles and then straight into the houses?
If thats correct i would not want to live on the same grid as sombody who welds all the time.

Yup..
In Europe everything runs on 220V.. We had to buy transformers to use our stuff there. I had a 1000w transformer in my room, and there were several throughout the house. The thing that sucked the most was that you had to remember to unplug your Nintendo or any appliance for that matter that used the big block style PSU that plugged into the wall like that when you weren't using them. Otherwise the fact they were on 50hz instead of 60hz would fry them..
