Is my burner dead?

I have an old Lite-On 16x burner and use Nero 5.5 with it. Tonight I tried to burn a data cd and Nero continued to tell me that there was no blank cd in the burner when there was. I tried several blank cds from different manufacturers and got the same result. I found that there was an upgrade to nero and installed that. No dice. I also checked my aspi layer and that is ok.

If i put a music or data cd in the drive, and it reads them fine. DMA is enabled, autorun is off.

Is the drive toast? Any suggestions on what else to try?

I recently had the same problem with a 24X LiteOn. I tried everything I could think of , reinstalled Nero replaced ribbon cables, tried different media, and a few other things. Then I saw a NEC 2500a DVD burner for $69 and that about made my decision for me. Burners are so cheap now they really are not worth spending much time or effort trying to fix them.

see if u get the same message using (if u have), xp's built-in burner, or other software.

i had a similar situation where i thought my burner might be on its way out. by process of elimination, i found it was my imaging software (Acronis True Image) that didn't like the change o' media i had started to use, tho burned perfectly w/nero. a CD cleaner might also solve ur prob. run it through 3-4 times.
