So I just lost power @ my apartment and my server wouldn't boot back up.
So I open it up to see what the problem was.
so the hard drive wouldnt spin up once it had power. So I took it out and tried it in my USB drive box and same, once power was on the drive wouldnt spin. I know the USB box is fine because the drive in it will spin once powered.
So I never heard of a drive dieing like this before WTF

scsi or ide? was it left on 24/7? drives die when starting/stopping...at least scsi. they seem to work fine as long as they are left on...then problems surface when shut down and restarted.

it is an IDE, and it is my server, so it would only be off if I lost power or had to move the PC, so, it was really always on.
it is a Maxtor 20.4 Gb DiamondMax 80 5400 RPM drive

If it ran 24/7 it may have seized up when it shut down. Couple of tricks that work for recovering the data (the drive is not salvageable).
Place the drive on it's side on a flat surface (preferably a wood table or a board) and tap it a few times on it's side with a rubber mallet. Then try spinning it up.
If that doesn't work, some people have had good luck putting the drive in the freezer for 30 minutes and then spinning it up.
I've used the rubber mallet trick often. Tap tap, connect it and see if it spins. If not, tap tap again.
Have a 2nd drive hooked up and be prepared to immediately do a Ghost image or clone if you get it to spin up. No telling how long it'll last.
Worth investing in a small UPS for the server next time you see one on sale.

I've never done the freezer trick myself, but a lot of people say it works. I just did a google check and they recommend leaving in the freezer in a bag for a day.

Wow, I for one have never heard of either trick......lol, hope I never have to use them
Now about your warrenty, you might be able to call them and bitch about it a bit, be nice though, and they might go ahead and honor it for you. That or do what a friend of mine does, he buys the same thing, and then goes back with the failed one and says it didn't work.

yeah if you open it up and touch anything kiss your data goodbye.
