NEC Rant....

Bought the NEC-2500A a while back as you may all remember.. Well, it's been a great drive.. Other than the fact it only burns at 4X no matter what. I've tried 3 different types of 8X certified media and it still only burns at 4X. What a drag! I've emailed NEC to inquire about a list of approved drives, however they still don't even recognize the drive as one of their products on http://www.necsam.com I've never even received a response from any of my emails. From the searching I've done some people have apparently been able to burn at 8X with this drive. But I've had no such luck. I have another 8X drive on the way I just hope that it will burn at 8X with the media that I currently have that is 8X certified. This is a Plextor, so we'll see.. Anybody else come across this with any of their 8X drives? Heck, I can't even get it to burn 2x mediat at 4x like some others claim they can with their different drives.. Go figure.. ha ha..

HaHa yeah man the plextor burn't @ 8x for me so it should work nicely
I did 1 burn before i sent it off to make sure all is in working order

by any chance is there a firmware update for the drive?

I have tried several different firmwares.. betas, hacked, official.. No luck.. Thanx Though..

Here is a list of their 8x approved media and here is a link to firmware 1.07 on the German NEC website(if you haven't already tried it). I have no idea why NEC chooses not to put information about their DVD writers on the USA page, I had to go to the German site to get firmware for my 1300a.

Thanks for that Link Shaggy.. That sure as hell fixed the problem. I thought I had the latest firmware already, guess I didn't.. But, I still stand behind my gripe on them having no support on the AMERICAN website and not responding to my numerous emails.. heh.. But it's burning at 8X now.. Now, I have to get with some peeps to do a group buy on some DVD+R heh..

Hmm, now that might be a thought
Maybe someone from PCA should get hold of Ritek and see what it would take to get DVDs wholesale for the lan party

Glad the drive is burning 8X for you, I have same drive but never gave it a try at 8X. I'll mark the link though in case I need it
I still have printable 4x disks to burn. I am happy enough getting 4x for the time being. After all the work creating the DVDs I can use the 15 minutes or so for a potty break and to grab a sandwich/coffee before starting work on the next DVD.
