was down at the sheriff's department today - while talking to one of the deputies he showed me their hi-tech warrant computer - this highly sophisticated flat file database system run in DOS and will only run on 386 or lower - original contractor (author) went out of business sometime in the early 90's - it is networked using the old stuff that looks like cable tv wire....fortunately someone had a spare 386 they found in a trailer to use when the original machine died.....this puppy boots from a 5 1/4 floppy - ah those were the days ...

their 911 system has a lot of big wall mounted 19" monitors and nice hardware, but from what they say the warrant computer my actually be more reliable :)

Yup, thats the reason why DOS was so good, if you only needed it for one purpose, it did its job. DOS is going away, but is still very prevalent in the workplace.
