Win ME and IE problems.

Post by PreDatoR »

I have co workers computer here. Thing has Win ME on it... ewww. Its just a older computer that he uses an old dos cad program on and to get onto eBay with. Problem is IE don't work. You can dial in to the ISP and connect up just fine. But you cannot do anything on the internet. You can ping any ip address you want and you'll get a return. I've dumped all the networking stuff reinstalled it farted around with IE settings for hours and it will not connect to any webpage that there is. I don't have a ME disc but i thought about just crashing the whole thing and loading 98 but i don't have any drivers for any of hte hardware that is in this rig. So its gonna be a royal pain if i do that. Anyone have any idea's on how to IE to see that the pc is connected to the internet. Everything i tried and i tried everything i could think of has failed to no avail.

Just a thought, but have you tried netscape? Other than that I don't have an answer for the IE problem.

Can you ping a URL? Try pinging http://www.yahoo.com. I suspect you won't be able to - I think something's wrong with his DNS resolution.

I'd check his HOSTS file to see if he has some browser hijaacker in there. Run Adaware, Spybot & CoolSearchWeb Shredder.

Also check to make sure a proxy hasn't been enabled.

That doesn't work then since he has ME try using System Restore to roll the system back to the way it was before the problem started.

System restore i doubt will do any good. He bought this coputer from a buddy of his. When he got it it had a 9 gig hdd and 50 megs free on it. The computer was loaded with so much shit it was unbelievable. I went through it and deleted everything that he would never use and installed a new modem cause the one that came with it didn't work. Proxy's aren't enabled at all. This PC hasn't been on the internet since he's had it. I'm thinking i'm just gonnna shitcan ME and put 98 back on it. Just plug in my USb network card and get it on the cable and hope like hell i can get all the correct drivers for everything.

Have you tried repairing IE? Going to add/remove and clicking on IE should give you the option to repair it.

Nothing wrong with ME and frankly you'll have better luck with driver on a clean install of ME - ME has more native drivers than 98 does.

ME is a friggin' memory hog on a 200 mhz cpu is whats wrong with it. it takes this time 10 min to boot me up which is about 8 and a half min to long. I don't have a ME disk he bought this computer from some guy and he don't have a disc either. So if it does get reloaded its getting 98 SE put onto it. 98 should have most of the drivers for this thing anyways being thats its as old as it is. He don't use a computer much other than to buy motorcycle parts off of ebay once in a while and uses this old DOS CAD program that is still 99 times better than this modern shit that is out right now. Old Boeing cad program or some shit he got from an avaition friend of his. Works damn good i'm gonna see if i can run it in XP cause its simple and to the point minus the bullshit bloat all the modern software has.
