Have (or had) an MSI 6163 Rev. 2 in one of my folding rigs. Tried to flash the bios and just about at the end of the little bars filling up, black screen and then many ugly beeps.

I assume I am f**ked here. Any ideas? Any ideas what might have gone wrong? I have done so many flashes before and never had one go bad.

If your board is under warranty - although I doubt it in your case, you could always RMA it.

There may be places where you can order a replacement BIOS chip.

Never seen a vendor that will RMA if you fuX0red flashing the bios, most say at your own risk, but worth a try.

This is most likely your only option here. Depending on the age of the board, yo uare looking at like $20 US

Gosh you would think in this day somone would make a double cmos chip, one part nonchangable and other as normal, will the ability to copy the nonchangable to the botched and at least be running at default again.. How hard could it be? Heck I'd pay a little extra for a mobo with that feature..

Actually there are some boards with that feature. Its just that none of them are 6 year old BX slot 1 boards...

My Gigabyte has a Dual BIOS.

guess that means i have one of the lastest of the 6163 pro's

still one of my favorite mobos of all time

http://www.badflash.com will send you a new bios chip with the image of your choice on it for $25.

thanks shaggy, I found a place that would reflash the old one for $20, but for 5 more why not get a new chip and then try to hotswap. If the hotswap works, I will have a backup chip....

hum... Gigabyte anyone ))

Gigabyte flash works nice, I have used both their in windows flash, and their old boot floppy flash.. both work well.

I had a MSI 6119(i think?) back in the day. MSI didn't specify that the latest bios was only for the latest revision and I wound up with a dead board. I ordered a chip from badflash and did the hot swap, it worked no problem.

I'm kinda curious - on a hot swap, do you guys boot to DOS, then swap out the chip? What is the exact procedure?

Ex- you boot to dos using new bios chip- then while the computer is running (ie Hot) You very carefully (grounded with plastic ic puller) pull the new bios chip out and place the dead one in and flash it
