XP forgets monitor

This is really annoying. I have a Samsung 955DF monitor which I run at a high resolution (1280 x 1024 @75 Hz). My problem is that occasionally when I boot up, XP has forgotten what monitor I have. This is annoying because rather than running at my nice high resolution, the display is running at 800 x 600. When I go to the display properties, it says I am using the "Default Monitor". However, as soon as I click the "Advanced" button to change the monitor, XP picks up that I have the correct monitor and I can change my settings back to my default ones.

This only happens when I turn the system on, and even then it doesn't happen every time. I've tried shutting down through various means (e.g. Start > Shutdown, Ctrl+Alt+Del > Shutdown, ACPI shutdown when I press the power switch, etc. ), but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any thoughts on what the problem might be?

You can try selecting a monitor type other than Plug 'n Play. Doesn't have to be the monitor you're using, just pick a nice high-end one from the list that supports the same resolution and refresh rates.

If you go to the manufacturer's website you may even find an INF file for your specific monitor.

To be fair the problem may not be with Windows. The monitor may be failing to report it's monitor type when Windows PnP services queries it. "Default monitor" is what Windows uses when it can't identify the monitor or the monitor is not PnP.

Check your cable to make sure it's firmly connected.

I have had the same problem with the 955df on my gf4. I fixed it by rolling back a version of the monitor drivers.

Well I was able to find an INF online for a similar Samsung monitor that seems to be working. My monitor came up fine this AM. ;) I'll try some of the other suggestions if this doesn't work. Thanks!
