120vac to 12vdc power supplie conversion?

Post by canton_kid »

Has any one tried a 120vac to 12vdc power supplie conversion?

Since everything in a computer runs on low volt dc, anyone know of a way to change a power supplie to 12vdc input easily? I am wanting to switch over to DC for several reasons. One I plan to be setting my house up for battery power. Going from 12vdc to 120vac with an inverter then back to dc in -12 +12
-5 +5 3.3 ect.. is a large waist of power. Much better if I could go 12vdc direct to the other stuff.

Also for mobile use, every vehicle has 12vdc!

I am kinda wondering if the 120ac might first be dropped to 12vdc as soon as it enters the P/s then ran through the rest of the P/s to make the other Volts. If so, it seems it should be easy enough to just cut out the 120 part and go in direct where 12vdc would normally begin.

Right now I don't have a power supply to play with and chance frying it, or I would test this theory.
