dead psu?

ok so im installin windows xp on a friends pc right now
its giving me the hard disk diagnosis failed thing in bios so i noticed i didnt have the jumpers set correctly on the hdd

i tried to remove the jumper while my pc was still on, i heard a little spark and now the pc will not boot at all!!
could i have caused a shock to they system?
i live on carpeted floor and never use a static wrist guard jobby

specs are

xp2400
a7n8x-e
512 stick of kreton blitz pc3500 ddr
radeon 9600 pro
antec 430 watts
maxtor 60 gig hdd (from a dell pull)

im in the process of swappin hardware out in some of my working pcs
i hope i didnt fry his psu because that sucka was expensive
any advice to why the pc refuses to work?

i see the fans spiining, and everything
and its been powered on for the past 30 minutes but all i see is a black screen!!

The HD you may and the IDE cable, you could have shorted something out = not good..

IF you shorted out the HD (which is possible) you're friend is really gonna pop you good.. heh..

I agree with Ego, try unplugging all Ide devices and see if you can get it to boot.. If thats a no go, next stop would be ram then video

Sounds like you may have shorted the PSU. NEVER EVER change jumpers with the power on.

Power off and remove the cord from the PSU or wall. Let sit for a few minutes. Motherboards have essentially anti-emp devices built in, they can withstand a certain amount of charge going through them. Putting no power into the board lets the board discharge. After a few minutes, plug the cord back in and it should power up, assuming it is your motherboard. If that doesn't work, try taking out the hard drive and see if it posts. I can't imagine that much charge could be going through jumpers? I don't see how the PSU would have failed... i don't think a hard drive would take out the PSU but maybe i'm wrong.

hello guys
back with an update

turned out the 60 gig hdd is dead
and the psu is dead!
the machine will power on with another psu(cheap 350 watter that gave me hella problems b4, go figure), however the screen will still stay black
i tried setting it as a slave in another machine and bios doesnt even see the hdd?

the psu is still returnable but i have to get him a new hdd!

another lesson learned, dont remove jumpers with the power on

Don't toss the drive!

Save it for the next time one crashes, see if you can swap out the controller boards

If you fried the drive my geuss is it is just the controller on the bottom of the drive. Dead drives are easy to find laying around, I just brought 3 back to life I dug out of the trash

Smart drive fixes mostly on WD drives.

I took a couple apart to get the magents out, there realy is not anything much inside them. Little motor, a nice magnet set, heads mounted on arms, and of course the platters (really nice shiny chrome looking disks). I actually have one on my desk for looks as a paper weight. Jet Black case bottom and the mirror chrome platters look pretty sharp! That one I just took the cover off of and left the rest in tact including magnets.

My geuss is that if you find a drive that died with a head crash or fried motor/bearings of the same brand you could swap the controller card that is under the drive and get it working again. Who knows, maybe it is the controler card that is deciding what size the drive is also, perhaps a dead 80 -120gig drive card stuck on the bottom of that 60gig will get you a good larger drive??

All the drives I take apart of a certain brand normally look the same inside. Actually they all look about the same, just the outside case is alot different shape for different brands.

If you decide to toss the drive, send it to me I'll pay the shipping on it.

I have an old system I could test it in that I don't care about frying, and I probably have or can get a card off a junk drive to try swapping it.
If it's totally dead I can always make another paper weight or pull the magnets.

well my friend kept the drive so i have no idea what is going on with it!
ill ask him for you and let you know

funny thing is it took me about 30 minutes to figure out how to remove the hdd from the machine!
i frickin broke off the plastic junk dell uses around the hdd only to find out its screwed down and i had to remove the front panel to unscrew it!

Yep, some of those systems can be funny. I have ran into several that are mounted vertically at the front of the case. You have to pull the front cover off and the screws go into the bottom of the drive, through the case front, as you found out already.

I have seen a couple of these pre-built brand name systems that way.
