Hi guys,

I've been having some issues with this new DVD burner, nothing quality wise. But I purchase some 8X+R media for it, and when in nero, nero only recognizes the drive as 4X tops. Well, this isn't true, it's actually 8X. I'm going to try using Nero6 Ultra tonight and see if that fixes the issue, but has anybody seen this happen before? Just curious. Needless to say, I've been stuck burning at 4X because of this little flaw. I've googled my eyes out trying to find info on a firmware update and no luck, if anybody else can help, or finds something I missed, I'd appreciate it.

On a side note, had contacted NewEgg about possibly faulty media, and their response was kind of funny. They told me they could send me a replacement pack of DVD+R if I sent back ALL 50 of the ones they sent me. Now I ask you.. How in the hell am I supposed to know if they write at 8X or 4X without burning one? Crazy people..

are you looking for firmware to fix the exact problem?
I dont know if you have ver 1.06 but heres two threads
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?threadid=86541 (pdu has alot of 2500a info in his tag)&
http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=21539

try this http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ it will tell you what the disc really are and Nero only tells what speed the disc/reader will allow for. And the media code may help you google to find if they are crap or not.

Thanks mojo

Appreciate the info, should proved helpful tonight, if I decide to get to it.

As far as what Nero is showing, it displays the "drives" maximum burn speed at 4X I didn't have any media in it at the time. So I'm thinking MAYBE it's like some of the older software for CD-R when it first came out, it was only made to write up to like 4x so that was all it recognized because there was nothing faster at the time, if you tried to use it with a faster burner it would still only burn at 4x, but if you used new software it would burn at the faster speeds. Or is this not the case?

Thanks Again!

that would be my best guess ego. Some newer cd-rw's are not even recognized in nero 5.x (new sony's in my experience). Only recognized in 6.x

Although I used to like Nero (CDs) my opinion of it is going downhill FAST (Dvds)!

Don't trust Nero!
I have a 2x toshiba DVD burner and a lite-on cd burner, nero sees those fine.

I have installed,
Lite-on combo drive, CD burner DVD reader
Light-on 411s 4x dvd burner
Nec 2500 8X DVD burner

Nero does not even see those drives installed in my system at all! I could probably upgrade Nero to a newer version, but other software I have sees all drives as soon as I install a new one and open the program!

I think Tmpgenc DVD Author version I have is older than the Nero I have, DVD author saw the NEC DVD burner and burned a 4x disk at 4x perfect, but Nero does not even know the drive exists!
If I tinker or maybe upgrade the frimware perhaps I could even burn a Ritek -r 4x disk at a faster speed like 6x or 8x, but I haven't looked into that yet. I am happy with 4x on a 4x disk. Putting peoples movies on DVDs for them I need reliability more than I need speed, so 15 minutes is fine. Why push it to save 7 minutes and maybe trash a disk, or burn one that doen't work for the client?

I'll buy some 8x disks next order and see what they do. But for the extra cots last I looked, I'll stick with 4x awhile longer.

So far I am happy with the NEC, I only burned a few disks though, been busy with alot of other stuff.
2x on a 2x disk and 4x on 4x disks, all were -R riteks.

Let me guess that you're using Nero 5.x. They're up to 6.x now.

As newer drives out it's not unusual for CD Burning software to fail to recognize it without a patch or an update. This goes for any burner software.

Hmm, you could be right,

I think I have the last 5.x before 6 came out. 6 was being reported as so flakey and full of bugs when it first came out I don't think I upgraded to it, was going to after some fixes were released and DVD burning was more reliable, but I don't think I did.

Still, my other programs see the new burners and burn to them fine, Nero isn't even seeing them as readers let alone burners. The other day I was gong to try DVD to DVD copy of one of my own DVds, Nero couldn't even read the DVD in the new burner so I could burn with the toshiba.

I have to go to the office today, I'll see if I can download the newest nero. I haven't been to the website for awhile, should see whats new anyway.
