Do the motherboards in a lappy have to be compatible for them to work? Since they are socket 478 would this work on any Socket 478 laptop ? Just curious because of the power savings these things have.

The Pentium M comes with it's own chipsets, the 855PM and 855GM. Both the 855PM and GM use a new ICH as well, ICH4-M. The CPU also has to be supported in the BIOS and with the required voltages.
You can pretty much forget about buying a cheap notebook with desktop P4/loud cooling/short battery runtime and swapping the CPU with a Pentium M to get a quieter notebook with a longer runtime.
