Hey Guys, I'm fixing to buy a DVD burner before the night is over. I'm looking at the NEC-2500A it's a Dual Format 8x burner. I can get it for about $111 w/o the Roxio software of $116 w/it. Does anyone have any harsh words agains the NEC burner? It's got 5 stars at the egg so far. Also, do I need the software? Or can I just use DVDShrink and Nero 6? to make backups of my DVDs? TIA! eGo

I don't know much about that nec one, but those i/o moagic ones that were around $69 after rebate seem to be ok. They are either rebadged optorite or btc drives. Though I believe the sales are off on them for now. I'd do a google search on the nec one for reviews and see.

DVDshrink does well working with nero at backing up dvd's. Some have complained of getting an i/o error. I get that with just one dvd so far. Haven't tried roxio but it's nice having a backup software just in case dvdshrink doesn't work. Other decent ones are clonedvd and dvd x copy. I'd try dvdshrink first and not get another till it doesn't work for you. Even then some have said they simply get another version of dvdshrink and that solves the problem.

With nero you can back up normal files like important folders, pictures, movie files etc to dvd. And even your system too. Beats using many cdr's.
