I am trying to install an older video game (OLD ONE) for the kids that requires 256 colors. However in WinXP I dont get a choice for 8bit (256) only a choice for 16 and 32 bit colors. The game will not install unless the desktop is at 256 colors.
Any suggestions.

XP doesn't officially support resolutions of less than 640x480 or color depths of less than 16K.

However if you go into the "Adapter" tab in Display properties, there should be a "List all modes" button. If you click on that, there should be a setting for 640x480 256 color.

There's also a way to force it in compatibility mode in the game's shortcut. Go here for details:

HOWEVER if it's that old a game, don't be suprised if it still doesn't work properly under WinXP.
