Anyone recommend a good top of the line PS?
I have a coolmax CT-470 (470 watt) PS and I am having problems with my computer randomly restarting. From desktop to bios. Usually a PS problem and Im thinking of upgrading the PS.

I also like th e Antec power supplies or if you have lots of $$$ the PC Power and Cooling supplies are really nice

I have had that kind or rebooting problem twice and both times it turned out to be a bad stick of ram. Just something to think about.

Antec True psu's and the new 'Noisetaker' psu's from Enermax (dual 12v rails) seem to be about the best. Unless you can spring for a pc power and cooling one.

Maybe you cound borrow a different PS first?
I thought I had a bad PS too and replaced it with an Enermax (random reboots) but didn't help. Well I wanted an upragrade anyway so I replaced the cpu MB and ram and a format/reinstall of windows. That worked. Funny thing is, I took all the old stuff and upgraded my p3450 to (the old)xp 1800 and expected to have the same problems. It runs fine. On the P3 upgrade I only repaired windows though. Hmmm.. It was either all the reseating or the windows repair.. I'm thinking the repair because I had tried reseating.
Just saying a bad PS isn't always it but very well could be.
Good luck.

Well it is a new mobo (had the same problem with the old mobo).
I have had issues like this with bad ram in the past. Im just hoping its not RAM. I have a gig of good ram in there and replacing a PS is much cheaper then the ram. Who knows. I might just deal with the reboots and save some cash till something really breaks

My son is been having rebooting problems on his Asus P4 1.4GHz system. I've been thinking about replacing the PS because we bought it really cheap used ($20). It does have p4 support, and all was working fine until last month.

He's got RDRAM on his mobo (640 total). All slots are filled. What is really weird is once it's at the desktop, it runs just fine. It only happens on a cold boot. I've enabled the memory test to allow the PW (and other componets) to warm up first, but even that did not help it. Once it reboots 2 times from a cold start, then it works just fine.

EXEC: Sure sounds like a PSU stability issue

Also , if you are having random reboot problems, be sure to check the MOBO for leaky caps- i just had to replace one recently. in 2003 bad caps wasa big issue over in japan

Yeah that was the first thing that I did. I did not see any leaky ones or any bulging. I'm probably going to try the PS first since I already have 2 new ones that I purchased.

I'd give it a run through with memtest86 before swapping out the PSU.
