this is why the government is so hard on destroying hard drives !

Post by renovation »

i just took a old Quantum prodrive lps 270 MB HARD DRIVE to the grave i thought .
last night 01-12-2004 as a experiment . i grab this old hd from a old COMPAQ and just put it on my junk parts shelf between Christmas and news years !
anyway so after my first post how to clean a hard drive i said ! lets find out if i can experiment and have a little fun to !
so i went in the basement and drilled a 1/4 hole in the top of the case . took some brake clean and sprayed it in the hole . then some lighter fluid was added to the brake clean . and i took the hd into back yard and lit a match :) as you see in these pictures i took after doing the that last night the disk still looked good ! when i took the HD cover off .
so i drilled a 1/4 hole in the platter disk on the hard drive.
and then went and took out the propane torch . i also made sure i had a fire extinguisher handy !
here are the pictures in this link !

not tested but i have a good feeling the disk after all this still could be read in part ! :( link to pictures

BTW burning the HD means nothing and data can still be recovered. The only way is to write zeros to the drive like 4 or 7 times. I know the government standard is either 4 or 7.

nah... go to a scrap yard.. find one of them electro magnets that the cranes use and turn that on and off a few times.

This crane doesent look like it has room enuff for the generator for that magnet to work at full power.

Image

This crane has a 15,000 watt gennerator for the magnet and can lift about 25 tons.

Image

This one has a 21,000 watt gennerator and can lift 40 tons.

Nether have the booms attached cause they are set up for shippin via any rail road.

I used to live next to a scarp yard and seen thies types of cranes go at it all day moving stuff all over the place.

you need to collect the magnet that's inside the hard drive!
man those suckers are strong!! I use it to magnetize my screw drivers and hold all my screws so they aren't all over the floor :)

My friend stuck one to the fridge a while back, and had to get a screwdriver to pry it off.
