This is really strange. I noticed today that IE6 will not open another window when I click on a link posted in any web page. It gives me a blank page with it trying to open, but never succeeds. If I hit the stop button, the link is then displayed and then if I hit refresh, then the link opens up.

I've already gone through Goggle, and a number of people are having the same problem. I've tried all their suggestions without success, including the ones posted at MS. I even tried to reinstall IE6 and that did not fix the problem. Is there hope that this can be fixed?

are u using the google tool bar ? if so that is the problem.

What is the Google toolbar?

Only things I can suggest is try and run adaware and then scandisk. Obviously something has corrupted ie.

If you have any pop up blockers, disable them and try.

I've run Adware with the latest updates and SpyBot S&D. It found a couple of things, but IE still refuses to open a link within a web page. I also ran scandisk and it found zero problems. I've also gone into the file-types to make sure the settings there were correct .

So for the time being, I've switched over to using Mozilla 1.5, and I must say, it's at least 25% faster than IE. I also like the way the bookmarks are stored - in a single file. Mozilla also was intelegent enough to set the cache size to 50 megs, instead of several hundred megs like IE.

The only thing I'm missing is IE spell check (the addon for IE). It checks any spelling while IE is open. Anyone know if they have sometihing like this for Mozilla?

Check your HOSTS file to make sure it hasn't been tampered with. A lot of the new browser hijackers screw around with it. Info here: http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/how_to_use_hosts.html

Reset all the IE security settings back to default.

If this is a WinXP system, and you know for sure that IE6 was working properly before a certain date, you can try to do go back to a Restore Point before that date using System Restore. Backup any data outside your Documents folder first.

I've set the security settings to defaults with the same results.

I looked at the HOST file, and I have 2 listed in my win98 rig:
host.sam
host
Both are 1k in size. The host.sam contains:

the host contains:
127.0.0.1 pop3.norton.antivirus # Added by Norton AntiVirus for e-Mail scanning

The HOSTS.SAM file is a sample file. The actual file that's used by Windows is HOSTS without any extension. Everything seems okay there.

I did another Google search and found this page:

It said that my version of OLEAUT32.DLL was the incorrect version. I did a check and the version that I was using is the one for XP: 3.50.5016.0.l I downloaded the MCREPAIR tool as suggested and it replaced this file with the correct one. Now IE works again.

Now my only delima is I like using Mozilla.

See if the one mentioned right here is what you're looking for. I haven't tried it myself so I wouldn't know how well it works.

Thanks for the info Doc, but it looks like they are still working on it. I'll just wait until they come out with one that really works well. Sounds like they are very close.

I'd be interested as well. Been using Mozilla for 2 months now and no way I'd ever go back. I do miss IESpell though.
