hmm
Check the bios and be sure boot up virus check is off.
If you use a anti virus and have a floppy for that, then boot up with a start up disk, then change to the av disk.
Otherwise I believe you'll need to hook that drive up as slave on another system, then run a full virus scan. Unless someone has a better and easier idea.
Also, if you're running xp then I'd try safe mode and select last known working configuration. program files/accessories/system tools/system restore

how much ram do you have? probably too many items starting up after booting. try what blade suggested about starting in safe mode. Press 'F8' after you restart your computer.

Try removing one of your sticks of ram, and replacing it but taking out the other or just keep doing individual sticks. my computer wasn't working for 2 months and then I realized a virus had burned itself in to my ram causing any new fresh installs to be corrupt and corrupting the installation itself. works fine after I replaced the vid card and mobo...almost replaced the processor at that point. the vid card replacement was a personal decision though
now I'm just having cooling problems but I think it's the cooling device I have on the CPU right now....awaiting my Volcano 12 to arrive in the mail. ooOOOOoooo....I can't wait.
Saddly I'm running about 60 deg celc comming down from a full load.
