We have a Dell Inspiron 1100 that was purchased a couple of months ago(sometime in August '03). Anyway as I as just going to use it this morning i notice a crack in the display. I always keep the laptop in it's carrying case after use so I honestly have no idea how this happened. From what I've read I doubt Dell will care how it was cracked as I believe they only replace LCD screens for bad pixels not cracked screens.

I haven't called customer service but im assuming the repair will cost even more than the laptops original price ($600-800)!!!!!

Anyone know of an easier and ALOT CHEAPER way to get this fixed. This ruined a perfectly good Sunday morning for me :(

First I would call Dell. It's worth trying to get it done under warranty. Play stupid. You're not computer literate. There's a "line" on the screen. Yeah could be a crack, you don't know.

LCD replacements are not worth it unless you get lucky and find a replacement on ebay (usually a dead laptop with a good screen). They also aren't easy to replace.

On the flipside you could sell you laptop and buy a new one. Inspiron 1100s are going for around $800 shipped now. Even less for a refurb.

yeah, im gonna try calling dell and see what happens anyway. If i put the laptop on ebay do ya think i'll get a reasonable deal considering the cracked lcd and all. how much do ya think i could get??

Hard to say. You can buy one for $750 right now shipped, plus the crack. Depends how bad the crack is.

also heres a pic that shows the extent of the damage. also note that the crack seems to have come from inside the screen "housing". there's no damage to the external part of the lcd screen.
