At a total loss. Nothing you could type on the keyboard would have caused a problem like that.
May just be a coincidence.
There are usually two seperate lasers in a DVD drive - one to read CDs and one to read DVDs (and often a 3rd laser for burning). Could be the DVD laser has failed.

Is Device Manager still seeing the drive as a DVD drive? If not you may try unplugging the IDE cable and plugging it back in while the power is completely unhooked from the system.
