Setting up a router... but in a weird way :) ??

Alright, basically my stepdad wants to have the cable modem as his internet for his work computer, so simple task to set up yes, but the thing is any1 who plays Warcraft 3 knows that a router makes it unable to create custom games or invite players for an arranged team game. My solution was this. Since I already have a onboard NIC and I put an extra NIC in a PCI slot just because it was laying around
. Well the thing I want to do is run the cable from the Modem directly to the Onboard so that way I'd still be able to do all the things I Wanted to do, and then run a cable from the NIC to the router connecting it to the Internet jack (Linksys Cable/DSL Router) and then run another cable from the first jack to the office computer downstairs.
Problems:
I'm not sure if I need a crossover cable or just a regular cable to use from the NIC in the PCI slot to the router.
As I go through the router setup wizard I get a message saying
"Unable to connect to the Router!
Check that the Router has been connected to the PC, or reset the Router to the factory default
settings by pressing the router's reset button for 10 seconds."
Is it even possible to run the connection to the router in this way? I would think so but not positive on that.
