What's your most memorable "DUH" moment during a PC Build..

Well? To date mine is the one I had over the weekend.. I got this new set up. An MSI mATX board, TBred B 1700+ 400W Allied 2 Fan PSU, 256MB DDR 2700 WD800JB (had some of this already) Well, I plug everything in and install it all in the case anticipating instant fire. Go to hit the power button and all the fans light up and start spinning the HD cycles, but No Go.. No Beeps.. Nothin'.. So... I'm on my way out the door after a few hours of dorking around with it. I stayed home from work today (big wedding over the weekend and I was tired) and when I woke up, I started messin' with it. Well, I tried different jumpers and this and that.. No go.. So I pull the board, and look at the CPU it's half way out of the socekt (HTF that happened I don't know).. So I reseat it.. Hit the button, no go.. Well, it's at this point I tear down ANOTHER box just to swap out the CPU and it works fine, Ram good.. So, I'm in the process of looking into an RMA when I take another glance at the board and what do I see? A P4 power connector? WTF?! I've never seen on of those before.. Plug it in and BAM! We have lift off.. So, it's all smooth from there.. the board is fairly limited as to what I'm able to set the CPU at. I've got it at 11x166 as that's the highest choice I have. So, what is everybody elses more memorable moment? heh.. eGo

Went to friends house, he is sort of computer smart outside the case, dumb as a rock inside the case though, I found out
His wife is a great cook and She promised me really good dinner for building this system.

He bought all this nice new stuff but wanted me to help put it together with (FOR) him.
So I show up at his house, nice place but cluttered like mine, we take about an hour making a place to build the system! Case looks wierd, like mainboard might not fit well. So First thing I install is the System board into the case to make sure it fits.
Ok it fits and real easy to get to, but looks like drives might hit Pci cards or the AGP card, so we install the drives and cards to make sure they don't hit. Tight fit, but they do fit if you install the drive then the cards! Just can't take out the drive without taking out the cards, grrrr. But he wanted this case and said ok!
So then we see it all fits in the case, so I proceed to connect all wires and cables and install ram.
OH OH, that's when I see I did not install the CPU yet :(
Normally I would do that first, out of the case, but because of all the worries if things would fit, I built the system first. Ok, no real problem. That was the ONE place there was plenty of room! I can pop it in there so I grab my Artic Sliver and I tell him, gime the CPU.

Yep you geussed, he hands me the INTEL cpu after I just assembled his AMD computer! )*
And even worse, he WANTS an Intel computer!!

So now the AMD system board has to come back out so he can ship it back and order an Intel board!
Course as you guessed the drives and everything else has to come out of the case before the main board can be taken out. I'm taking it apart, he's packing the pieces back in the boxes.

So here we are in an all carpeted house taking apart a band new system, BAREFOOT (static you know, not even socks) and I hand him the Nice new CD burner (right as his wife says, "Aren't you guys done yet") yep, by this time I was not real happy anyway, and when he turned towards her as she said that, he dropped the drive on my toes!

Now that's bad enough, but then of course I jerked my foot when it hit me, so it smacked the leg of the table pretty hard too (not on purpose).
Well, it all ended up we took a long time to do nothing, his wife was ticked she didn't have the new system to play with, and would not cook super! So I didn't get the great free meal I was promised for helping him build the system. By this time I am really hungry, and like me, he lives in the boonies, and there wasn't anything decent to cook quick but hot dogs (bad ones, chicken and hog parts).

OK, so this is all over with now. He got his new board and someone else built his system for him.
(I was out of town)

Oh yea, did I mention the cd burner doesn't work and his wife is mad at ME for breaking it :bang

:d rink

And yes that is true! So always EAT DINNER and check your parts FIRST when doing freebies!

- repeatedly forgot to plug the power cable into my Radeon 9700
- crammed a 440GX dual PIII board with HP FX4 graphics card and 10k SCSI drives into a desktop ATX case. Case temps ++
- forgot to plug in the CPU fan on my old Athlon 500 hard-O/Ced to 650, and proceeded to play Quake2 for an hour. Survived, but was unbelievably hot.
- poking around the back of an older single-frequency 19" monitor while it was on. Couldn't get it to sync properly, and whilst poking at some of the pots I managed to slip with the screwdriver and contact some unseen important bits. Monitor died right then and there.
- Bought a Thermaltake Chrome Orb ;)
- used an improper heatsink installation tool and killed a brand-new Asus A7M266-D.

I've actually been really good the last couple times I've tore down my system. The last 4 installations/moves I've done have gone fine.

I sold my old barebones to a friend, took them out of my Lian Li and put them in his tower. Worked fine. Moved the new parts I bought to replace my old system, into my Lian li. Worked Fine. Moved those parts to a wooden case I built. Worked fine. That case kinda sucked as far as cooling so I bought another and moved the parts once more. Worked fine.

Only problem I've had lately is heat with my new (smaller) case. I took out the CPU and re-applyed some arctic silver, put the HS back on and it didn't start. I was kinda scared, thinking I crushed the core or something. Well, I take off the HS and it looks fine. Re-apply some arctic silver once more, and it booted up fine that second time. Have no idea what happend, but it's been working perfect for a while now (minus heat issues)

This is not to say I haven't screwed up :) Though, it's been long enough now that I can't really remember :) Thats always a good thing :D

OUCH!! That reminded me of another one.. One time I was trying to see what the voltages were on a mobo I have as the manual did not list the identities of the pins for the front USB header.. Well, how can you test it if it's not on? heh.. Well, I touched the wrong two pins at the same time with one probe and "pfffft" off it went.. Wouldn't reboot for a while.. Cleared the Cmos for an hour and it finally came back.. lol.. eGo

Thanks KOO KOO MOUSE
Unfortunately it really is true too!

My newest FOO FOO is tonight!

My #4 system is seldom used, more for playing and testing stuff, connected to the others through a lan.
My ISP will let me bring in a system and connect to the NET through a lan. Great for those large 180meg program demo downloads!
My connection is about 3k at best at home.

So ok, I decided tomorrow (today) I will take the system in and do some downloads. I booted up the sysem and it works! The way I play with it I wasn't sure the state it was in or what O/s it had installed!
Real pain dragging it back and forth, so I will probably just leave it a few days! I get it about ready to go, all disconnected, side back on, sitting by the door ready to take to the van.

I'm going to download the programs fast at the ISP and bring them home on cd, but leave the system there, right.
Yep, the burner is in my main box! #4 only has a DVD-rom :(
I forgot I sold the burner to a friend cheap, now I don't have one for #4! Main box has both DVD burner and Cd Burner, so I guess I will pull the CDburner out for #4 now, and order a couple more.

So back to the bench with 4 and where is that screwdriver??

Didn't have the heatsink installed properly on a 1.2 gig t-bird and it went up in smoke in about 5 seconds after first boot. Nice big black burn mark on the underside of the cpu. Did manage to RMA it tho. :D
