what is this "new.net"?

i noticed that one of systems was running slow yesterday. i was trying to play some SOF2 and Q3 UT and was experiencing what i thought was some real bad packet loss. frames would skip and i was "warping" all over the place. i tried browsing and pages would hesitate then load slower than usual. i even tried playing some quake2 (single player) and it was running like crap. so i disconnect my router and hook up my cable modem directly to the pc. same results :(

i then try another pc and no problems.. smooth ping/performance all the way. ruling out "internet" issue i went through the long process of scanning all the files on the pc (took amlost an hour). no virus detected. after blaming the wife for downloading stuff she shouldn't have and banging the keyboard numerous times i was about to give up when i thought of disabling some programs on "startup". i went into msconfig (im running win 98se btw) and unchecked various programs that load at startup... qtask, msoffice, etc. and something i've never seen before "new.net".

after the reboot everything was back to normal... smooth browsing, gaming, etc. i then check everything on startup except this "new.net" and everythings ok. i went into control panel/add remove programs and saw "new.net domain 5.40" installed as an application.

so to make things short, what exactly is this program? is it safe to uninstall? i honestly don't even remember installing it in the first place :)

some kind of software that enables you to see "new.net" domains -

and facilitates download of "content" to your computer

spyware/adware at least in part

New.netâ„¢ seeks to become the world's leading domain name registry by introducing and selling domain names with new extensions that offer greater relevance and meaning than current Web site addresses ending in .com, .net, and other existing top-level domains. We are making this possible initially by encouraging millions of users to activate their Internet browsers to recognize New.net domain names and partnering with leading Internet Service Providers to activate our domain names automatically at the network level. We now have tens of millions of users that have access to New.net domain names, and we are confident that New.net domain names will soon be recognized universally across the Internet. Our primary objectives are to sell domain names that individuals and companies genuinely want, and to make the Internet an easier place for users to find what they are looking for.

We have developed proprietary technology that allows our domain-naming system to exist alongside the traditional naming systems currently in use on the Internet. New.net has applied for patent protection for this technology.

probably they are reselling subdomains..............
