a friend needs help here

can we help him
Ok, here goes. I have a voodoo 5 and run win2000 server. When I put the card into the pc, it boots up and hangs before it goes to the logon screen. I pull it out and use the on board video and it works fine and can log in to the os. WHATS UP WITH THAT. I have the driver for voodoo 5 and still the os dont like voodoo 5. Any ideas on how to have the OS like the voodoo 5?

Peace

I have to beg the question WHY? If it's a server he doesn't need a gaming card in there - the onboard should suffice.

If he is gaming on a server OS for some deranged reason, he can pickup a Geforce2 MX used for $20 which will FAR outperform the Voodoo5.

ANYWAY if he's a glutton for punishment, the problem probably has to do with the onboard card. It has to be properly disabled. There should be a setting in BIOS that disables it - some mobos might have a jumper instead.

There might also be a setting in BIOS that lets you select whether it initialized PCI or AGP for video first. The onboard is an AGP. If the V5 is a PCI he'll need to change that setting.

Sometimes you just can't get a mobo with onboard video to recognize an add-on card - common problem. Either it works or it doesn't.

There were never any official Voodoo drivers released for Win2K that worked worth a dang. The only luck he'll have is with hacked drivers. He should find some here: http://voodoofiles.com

HOWEVER I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't work properly under 2K Server - they're designed for 2K Pro and there ARE differences.

MY ADVISE TO YOUR FRIEND: Use the Voodoo5 for a doorstop. 3Dfx is dead.... LONG since dead... get over it and move on with your life. :)

If it's an intel video onboard, you may not get it to work unless you use an Nvidia card.
