Wireless repeater / range extender ?

Im trying to help my father out here.
He is using a SMC router based on 802.11b (I believe). There are other companies that produce a wireless range extender, but they mention that they only work with the same brand and SMC does not make a range extender (that Im aware of).

Is it really true that say, the D-Link Range extender will not work with an SMC router? It would really be nice if it would. He likes to use the laptop outside and in the garage (dont ask me why) but both are too far of a jump from the base to work together. If a range extender or repeater would work with his network that would be excellent.
Any ideas?

Hi, I got two d-link wireless routers and they work all around my house making the signal stronger. Might wanna try that but it costs a bit more. Im not sure about the compatibility issue in your case though.

the dlink range extender should work, you will have to change its IP I believe. Thats what they wanted me to do with mine....I could never figgure it out...then again I am dumb. I cant even get it to work with my dlink stuff. LOL I have to work on that. :)

My guess would be dropping a range extender on their would violate any FCC approvals that exist for either product. Because wireless is being stuff into the air, FCC gets jurisdiction over who uses what. It might work, but its probably illegal.
