windows ME and CDROMS and a Shotgun :)

ok guys, here is a good one for you.

my buddy's system ((windows ME) << suxx to be him)) mainboard fried. It was an HP pavilion. anyway, i replaced the mainboard, and now, when widows boots, a bsod omes up saying,m some of your IDE devices are running dos compatibility mode and some are not, then it restarts and runs every IDE device in dos compat mode. which make sthe CdRW and the DVD drive not register with windows. Despite my trial in overinstalling windows, and reinstalling the Nforce 2 drivers, and again and again, as well as using my cdrw, the damn thing keeps comming up with that damn bsod, only to have me reboot and remove the reg key that makes that. After removing that key, i plug the drives back in, and try again, but the same thing keeps happening.

did you replace it with a new MB / or a new one that was the same?

it sounds like you tried to put a installed drive on a new MB, windows does not like that @ all... if that is the case, best to do is a clean install

Not sure about Windows ME (what a piece of crap OS), but for Win9x, you can run regedit and search for NOIDE. If you find any occurance, delete it and reboot. I sometimes have to do this with mobo replacements, but normally installing the drivers for the chipset will also work. Do you know what chipset you installed?

As Exec said, the NOIDE toggle has been tripped. 98 and ME will do this whenever it fails to find a proper IDE driver to protect your data.

Once toggled, it can only be reset via Regedit and you can't install a 32-bit IDE driver until you reset it.

I remember what a pain in thass that was when the BX mobos first came out and 95 didn't have a native driver for them.

yea, the reg key i was talking about was taht NOIDE.
Well, the problem was that at the end of teh harddrive, the partition was damaged, when i popped his drive into my system, and tried to copy the partition so i would be sure to not perminatly damage n e thing

partition magic repaired it and everything worked fine :_) thanks for the help.
