Working on a person computer when all they had was a printer problem, and I managed to create extra work for myself. The person gave me just the tower so I had to hook up my keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc. I use a logitech I touch keyboard with usb connector. I lost the ps/2 adapter so I couldn't use that so I just had to put it into the USB port. Well I stuck it in and turned on the computer. The computer loads to 98 just fine and no problems what so ever. I get past the login screen by just hitting cancel with the mouse since the drivers for the keyboard weren't installed yet. Then the new device detected window pops up I install the monitor drivers and then go for the keyboard ones. I first just did a search because I didn't feel like digging out my cd for the logitech keyboard. It found one windows can use and so I said fine and clicked next. Then it froze. Everything totally froze so I had to hit the restart button. I tried going into safe mode but I have no idea what to look for I tried to see if the driver was in the device manager and it wasn't there. My guess was that the driver started to install just breifly and then locked up, never getting to finish. So now I sit at the Windows 98 loading screen with the color bar at the bottom moving for ever. (Let it go for 3 hours while I went out) And it was still at the same spot when I got back. So at this point I pretty much can't even get into Windows 98 with out going into safe mode. Since safe mode has no cd rom support I can't install the drivers or unistalll from the cd. I'm lost and I have no idea where to turn next so any suggestions are welcome.

Oh, I have also looked through Bootlog.txt and Win.ini trying to spot something but I don't know what I'd be looking for and I didn't find anything.

With CD-ROM support from the 98SE CD or a boot disk, and copy the drivers from the CD to the HD then reboot in safe mode then BAM! GL eGo

ok I appreciate the explaniation but a little more detail would be nice. Copy which drivers where I don't remember what files go on a Win98 boot disk being how I never use 98. So I need to know what drivers I need to get where I need to put em and where I can get them. I don't have a 98 boot cd or disk on hand so that's my problem. One other question I just need to clarify do I go into safe mode or do I boot to floppy? Stupid 98....

You can get one here.. http://www.bootdisk.com just look for a 98 boot disk w/CD support. You'll just need to copy the keyboard drivers from the CD to a spot on the HD then boot into safemode and install the drivers from the HD. The floppy will boot you into dos so you can copy the files via dos. Then reboot w/o the floppy into safe mode. LMK if you need more help.. eGo

You can also go back to a previous point when the pc was working by following this:
1.Start Windows in MS-DOS mode (press the Ctrl key as soon as your PC starts. This will get you the Bootup menu. Once the menu is up, choose Command prompt only)
2.Type Scanreg /restore at the prompt
3.You will get a screen where you can select which registry backup to use
4.Choose your backup and press Restore
5.When ready you'll be prompted to Restart your computer

The only draw back to this procedure is it will also remove any programs in the registry that you've installed.

thx Ego that first post you made makes perfect sense to me right now that I reread it. I wasn't in the right state of mind last night to be dealing with it, so it looked like I was reading arabic. I realised what you mean now though.

here's another problem on the list.... my dos command skills aren't exactly .... up to par so yea. I need to copy every single file from the Logitech cd but I really don't have the patience to do like 100 some files one directory at a time with *.* c:\X Is there a way to copy a directory and everything in it all at once? I've gotten the setup file over but that won't seem to run. So I don't know whats next. Either I need a list of dos commands or tell me the specific one or tell me another way.

ok I tried solving my own problem and in doing so I'm just frustrating myself more. According to http://www.computerhope.com/msdos.htm#02 xcopy is what I need to use to get everything from this e: drive (cdrom) to the c: drive (harddrive)... directories and all. Well the site says type xcopy e:\*.* /a /e /k to use the things I want. (actually it says for it's example xcopy h:\*.* /a /e /k even though those are the switches I need to use anyways) but still the same idea stands. So I type in what should be a simple command and give me a simple result and instead of getting what 9,000 other people get I get Bad command or File name..... I have no clue where that's coming from because I have checked the directories, I've checked the cd, I've typed dir on both e: and c:\keydrive which is where I'm putting the keyboard drivers on the c drive. The e: drive has the same things it had on it before I tried xcopy and the c: drive directory that I'm trying to work with has been delete and recreated and tried. So basically this response is completely bogus and I have no idea how to get around it because I can't even find the problem to begin with.

Another odd thing that was happening was that I created a directory and decided I didn't wanna use that one, so I was in the c:\> and I Typed del keyboard to delete the directory came up with the yes or no option and I hit yes. And then i don't remember exactly what it said but it was something like filename doesn't exist or something to that extent. I'm not really worried about that and actually could careless. I just wanna fix this friggin keyboard error and then get his easy printer problem fix and get the computer out of my house!
