DVD-R/RW or DVD+R/RW OR
One of each? Hell, for the price of the Sony and Plextor Dual format drives, you can have one of each the - and + R/RW drives.. And with todays cases that's not an un-realistic choice.. Just a thought.. eGo

It's nice having both, but not necessary. Either format will work fine. DVD-R is more compatible with older DVD players but as time goes on that's becoming less of an issue.
Basically if you want to be sure anyone you give a DVD to can play it, use DVD-R.

Yah...
That's what I was thinking from what I've read about the -R... I may go ahead and get one.. I've seen them as low as $99 And then I'll just have to find some good software to back up my DVDs I'd rather not have to do all the work myself.. Just pop it in and let it go..

I got a Sony dual-format just to hedge my bets. I picked up the Sony DW-U10A in black, flashed it to a DRU-500A, and so far it's done everything I've asked it to. I've only tried the burned discs on a couple of DVD players, and on any that will read burned discs, DVD-R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R all worked. the only ones that didn't were my parent's old 1st gen Philips-Magnavox player, and my uncle's first gen RCA. But neither of those two can read any writable media, so it isn't a format problem.
