MX500 SUCKS with Mouseware 9.7

Well I know a lot of you are using the Logitech MX500 / MX700 so I assume something's wrong here.
I uninstalled the Intellimouse software for my old Explorer mouse, installed the MX500 and it worked fine - silky smooth.
Installed the Mouseware 9.7 software and now the wheel SUCKS. It stutters.
Is there some sweet version of mouseware that I should download?
Also, I'm not real impressed with the mouseware utility at all. MS Intellimouse lets you map ANY key to any of the mouse buttons. Friggin' Logitech only allows you to map certain keys.
Also Intellimouse allows you to have a custom button configuration for every app or game.
I'm about ready to throw this thing back in the box. I'll try uninstalling mouseware later and d/ling the latest version.
Any other suggestions?
Also, if the software is so inflexible, why do you guys like this mouse so much? Yeah it feels nice, but so does my Explorer 3.0.
If you can't bind the buttons to any keyboard key, then how do you deal with games that don't properly support all the mouse buttons?

i use the 9.75 version
and really.....i only use the 2 thumb buttons and the button right before the scroll wheel (in addition with the left and right mouse button)
I map them to a f10-f12 and I have no problems with it in games
but yes, normally any software that comes with a mouse sucks

Well I'd just as soon not use the software, but that usually makes the extra buttons unusable in games - what would be the point of that?
I used both side buttons on my Explorer (next weapon & arm grenade).
I'll try some games without it, but if they can't map the side buttons (particularly HL & Q3) then I'm going back to the Explorer.
----------
Well so far HL & Q3 both recognize the side buttons, that's all I need. Would be nice to be able to use the extra one on top though

you can, just map the top keys to some key you never use (like f12) in the mouse properties

You can't do that without installing mouseware, and mouseware messes up my wheel.
Also, even if it did work, as I said before, the choice of key binds is less than thrilling. Intellimouse lets you bind ANY keyboard key or key combination to any mouse button.
Well if I can't get mouseware working right I'm selling the MX500.

Latest Mouseware 9.78 solved the problem with the wheel.
And HALLELUJAH!!!! 9.78 lets you define ANY keystroke combination to a button like Intellimouse does. Those of you with MX500 / MX700 will want to download it.

Well I tried to give it a fair chance, but I give up.
The MX500 doesn't conform to the shape of my (big) hand like the explorer does. I find I'm cramping my pinky trying to find a place to put it and not suceeding.
I could probably get used to that but the REAL issue is that I can't get some games to recognize some of the buttons.
MOHAA doesn't see the mouse wheel button for instance. That's assinine. That should be a standard MOUSE3 button.
I just give up.
Moreover it really doesn't feel any more precise than my Explorer 3.0 mouse so I see no compelling reason to fight with it.

I agree with that.

thats weird because I noticed on the MX700 the wheel does NOT work in Homeoworld 2 with the mouseware drivers installed. I usually just use the default windows drivers anyway tho.
