SATA Hard drive Q

Is the 10,000 rpm WD Raptor worth the price compare to 7200 RPM SATA drives ?
36.7gig WD Raptor 10,000 RPM 8MB Cache $131 shipped
120gig WD 7,200 RPM 8MB cache $114 shipped
Honestly, I would never use 120 gigs but I'd probably use more than 36 gigs. I plan to upgrade soon with one of theses drives with an 8RDA3+ and an XP2500+ Barton.

That depends on how much performance you really want from your HDD, which is the current bottleneck of performance.

WD's drive, however, delivers single-user performance that matches and even exceeds not only 10k RPM SCSI but also that of 15k RPM units. It is the answer to many years of prayers from power-users and enthusiasts worldwide.
p.s. the latest 15K SCSI drives are still faster

What do you do on your PC that could take advantage of RAID-0 and is worth the higher risk of dataloss?
RAID-0 does only help in some situations, if you want to know more check the Storagereview FAQ

a;; my storage isn't on my current RAID0, if a RAID disc dies, it is my OS that just needs a re-install

I can't justify $285 for a 36gig 15k RPM SCSI drive. To top it off, I'd need a SCSI card too. RAID setup is a waste of time for me. I mostly do gaming on my PC.

for me to do the RAID0 with the two WD Drives above, it will only cost the cost of the two drives, the MB I want has a SATA RAID controller....

I raided my 2 Serial seagate 120g 8meg drives on my onboard controler. its ok, I still miss scsi.
I say best case, get the wd 10k as your boot drive then a 120g serial drive as your storage one. that woudl be best of both worlds.

I got the 2x WD Raptor 10k rpm drives in RAID 0 on my I875p mobo, and let me tell you -its FAST!

I agree with Greg, the IDE 10K + 120GB for storage is a very good setup.

For me, a 120gig storage drive would be a total waste of hardware. Currently I have two WD 40 gig drives and still have 40 gigs open. Then again, a 120gig SATA is cheaper than a 36 gig.
