Unexpected shutdowns in winXP when online?

Post by blackhawk »

My daughter complained of unexpected shutdowns when she goes online, not sure how long its been going on but sat down to figure it out tonite and this is what happens.

Go online, dialup and after about 5 minutes tops, a screen comes up with

Your computer is shutting down under the NT Authority System, please save all work and exit, countsdown to 1 minute then reboots. Says cause is Remote Procedures Call was terminated unexpectedly. Thought it was a virus initially but appears to be a windows screen.

Its winXP pro, with NAV on a micro Epox mb with an XP1800.

All things normal when offline.

Any ideas?

Quick fix is to enable the Windows XP firewall on the dialup connection (I assume this is XP?). That will let you stay online without getting shut down.

Now download the security patch here (you want the XP 32bit version) and install it: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treevi ... 03-026.asp

Reboot and your anti-virus app will delete the virus when it tries to load on startup.

If there's no anti-virus installed then you can run a free online scanner here: http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Make sure to check the box for "Clean"

Or use the free MSBlaster removal tool here: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av ... .tool.html

I would also recommend installing an anti-virus program. AVG is a good free one here: http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

thank you both so much for the time and effort into helping me................I just got in late last nite and off again very early tomorrow morning for a few more days and had to get my other daughter online, my daughter at university had network card problems so had to trouble shoot long distance and this one couldn't use her internet anymore

problem solved following directions....one thing I first noticed was that her NAV wouldn't update the definitions since July so expect thats when it started!

this is really a great community on this board :D
