I just picked up a wireless access point for my house. I'm thinking of putting it on top of my monitor since its relatively elevated and is pertty central to the rest of the house. Should I be concerned about interference between the monitor and AP? TIA.

Not a good spot. Monitors put out a lot of noise due to the high voltage fly-back transformer. Also gets pretty on top of a monitor.

Higher the better - top of a bookcase or something.

Next question: SSID broadcasts. I've anabled MAC filters so that only my devices can connect. Is it still a bad thing to have SSID broadcasts? Why do I care if poepleknow I'm here if they can't connect to me?

I never worry about it myself, but I suppose it can be argued that it's more secure.

Hmmmm.... next problem. It seems the wireless connection dies every 3-4 minutes or so while I am using it. WinXP just says "wireless connection unavailable", then immediately says "Wireless connections available" as if the computer first booted. I then have to manually reconnect to my AP. This would be less frustrating if I didn't have to manually connect every time.

I've been looking at the logs from the AP and if keeps saying "Wireless PC connected" with a MAC that matches the laptop. There is a firmware upgrade available for the AP (Linksys WAP11, btw), so I'm going to try that. Any thing else I might try before I return this thing?

Firmware update fixed it. I'm connected and online all the time now.
