now we can put bumpmapping we can feel on ANYTHING a Tokyo uni has been perfecting a cute little technology called SmartFinger that fits onto your fingernail, and makes surfaces you touch "feel" like something else. you can run your finger over a smooth sheet of paper and it can feel like the surface of mars, or you can feel writing, or even braille, but the paper is actually smooth. this thingo that fits on to your finger vibrates your fingernail as you move your finger over a surface, to make whatever surface you are touching with your finger feel like whatever bumpmap you want..

as a machinist i can see a use for that... a finger mounted surface gauge... so you can feel better how good the finish is.

thats cool. I've noticed one of the big things with a finish on a machined part is the coolant. We changed coolant at work and the new stuff sucks. Don't smell as rank but the finish comes out terrible.

i cant remember what we used... but you got it form the oil rack and mixed it wiht water and it looked like milk... when left sitting in the tank for 2 days it stunk like hell... most coolant tanks had small air lines in them to keep it stired up.. but over weekends the comprosers didnt run.. so it got a chance to sit... also we had things that were like urnal pucks but were made of cyinide... it would kill the bactiera in the coolent... also got all over your hands... just make sure you dont stick them near your face untill you washed them.

i do remember useing straight oil once for a finsh on somting and that kicked ass compared to the coolant.. but the coolant did just that.. cool.. when i was making 17" stainless bushings with 14" holes in them the coolant kept it nice and cool while i hogged it out with a 6" spade drill.. then took .25" a side with a boaring bar. It was a nice turret lathe. didnt have a long center to center distance... but could do a 25" swing.
