Wireless netowrk is killing me

I'm at my in-laws this weekend trying to set them up with wireless for their new cable modem. I've set these up in the past and did not have nearly as many problems. I'm using all Linksys gear.
Current Situation: all wired computers in the house are able to connect to the net (I'm posting from them). I do NOT have any MAC filters in place yet. All wireless devices have the proper SSID entered. All wireless are running WinXP. I enabled WEP on the router and entered the key into the WinXP config util. It won't connect to the router no matter what happens. The machine either takes some random private IP address (as if it couldn't find the DHCP server on the router) or it givves me a message saying "Invalid IP Address". The signal strength is always excellent; the wireless and the router are one room apart.
I'll keep searching LinkSys support, but if anyone has any experience with this, I'd appreciate some direction. TIA.
