Why won't my comp turn off!!???

Alright, I have Win Xp Pro installed and ever since I put it on my puter the damn thing would hit the "You may now shutdown windows" screen and I would have to press the power button just like in the days of Win 95... I was ok with that because I barely shut the thing off BUT now that I have finally updated my bios, the damn thing WILL NOT shutdown...it just restarts...

I click shutdown computer, it shuts down then starts back up...
only way to shut it off is to hit the switch on the PS...
I fiddled with the power settings in the bios and still nothing...
anybody have some sugestions?

Motherboard is a K7SEM with a Athalon 1.333, v.1.2b on the Award bios

Was this an upgrade or did you install XP clean? This happens sometimes during an upgrade.

WindowsXP did not properly detect ACPI when it installed (which is how Windows turns the computer off).

If you go to Device manager, under the Computer category you will find listed "Standard PC". It should be "ACPI Uniprocessor PC". As long as it's a Standard PC it will not shut itself off.

First question for you: Is this a problem? Other than the computer won't turn off by itself, there's no problem running without ACPI. If you leave your system on 24/7 then it's no big deal. Moreover it's one less service running.

If you want to fix this it'll take a bit of work.

First off you need to make sure that ACPI is enabled in BIOS.

Then you need to do a Repair installation of XP:

Boot with the XP CD. If you use a RAID or card EIDE controller then you need to have the drivers for it on a floppy and you'll need to hit F6 to load them when prompted to do so to install "SCSI or other controllers" (first prompt when the installer runs).

The first menu that comes up will ask if you want to use the Recovery console - skip that one (press Enter to continue).

The next menu (After the EULA Agreement) has an option to do a REPAIR. Select Repair. This forces XP to do a "Refresh install" similar to Win98 when you installed it over itself. You won't lose data or applications, but it'll reinstall all the XP core system files and wipe the device manager and re-detect all devices (make sure you have your drivers handy in case it asks for them).

Keep in mind this will blow away ALL service packs and Windows updates - you'll have to install them again.

Hopefully, if ACPI is enabled in BIOS, XP should detect it and install drivers for it.

I fixed the whole not shutting down thing just before I checked this post and it was the ACPI in the bios! Derr..

And Penguin thanks for the how to, but no it's not a problem having to push the button to make it turn off. So I'll leave it as it is. Besides....it IS a big hassle to have to do all that just so the thing will shut off on it's own. I'll wait the 20 seconds and do it myself
