Basically, Thermalright realizes the SLK900 doesn't fit all mobo's, so they did a redesign. A trimmed down SLK900 that will still fit 92MM fans, but should fit on any mobo that a SLK800 fits. Weighs about the same as a SLK800 at 527g. And it will have a 3-prong clip instead of bolting to the mobo.

From Thermalright:

" While in attempt to achieve high performance and low noise, SLK-900U had no comparable rivals in the current market. However its unique fin orientation and the complexity of installation had pushed many enthusiasts away. The design concept for the SLK-900A was to match the performance/noise ratio of SLK-900U, while make it more users friendly and better compatible for Socket A motherboards. With these perimeters in mind, our engineers went back to drawing board.

"The total fin area on SLK-900A is virtually unchanged from SLK-900U, this ensured great thermal dissipation from SLK heritage and superior thermal capacity, meanwhile the angular base has been redesign to better guide the blow down air current to every fin and reduce back pressure to extend the MTBF for the fans while decrease the center of mass, said Chief RD Engineer Scott , "by rotate the fin orientation we effectively avoid just about all the capacitors previously would get on the way, and our 6 prong heat sink clip will hold this mammoth on the CPU socket closely on the CPU die." By using 92mm fan, users can move same or more CFM of cool air thru the HSF to cool down their scorching CPU, while the fan rotates in much lower rpm to reduce noise.

The weight on SLK-900A Heatsink body is roughly the same as SLK-800 due to redesigned base plate. User can enjoy the ease of installation without worrying heatsink falling off CPU socket."

Comin' soon. :)

so since they are comparing it all to the slk800......does it mean its gonna perform the same?

They say:
The design concept for the SLK-900A was to match the performance/noise ratio of SLK-900U

So I'd think it will perform better. We shall see.

Argh I just ordered a SLK-800U and now this? Oh well.

You're ok. ;)

I can't see this new one being anymore than "maybe" 1-2c better. Should be called the SLK800B actually.

Mainly they want to release one that can take a 92mm fan and that fits most mobos.

The slk800 does (unofficially), with some bending of one clip.

I sure hope so cause I ordered a 92mm Panaflo fan (http://heatsinkfactory.com/cgi-bin/HFAs ... gno=CF-022) to go along with the SLK-800. Should get here tomorrow and once I get my TV card in I'm gonna install them both.

Be sure to see this for tips on installing the heatsink. (scroll down)

It is very easy, but try several flathead screwdrivers and choose one that best fits the slot. You don't want it slipping out. Then be sure the heatsink it pushed mostly towards the rear. ;)

Also noticed the weight of that new Zalman 7000. It is 773g!! These Therrmalright sinks are light by comparison. And will still cool much superior, and be quieter too. If used with a quiet fan orf course.

Here it is with a slk800 to the right:

Image

It's 20g heavier and most of that is just spread out to fit a 92mm fan. The slk900a is slighly shorter than the slk800 too. Underneath is the same except the bottom plate is a bit wider.

Compared to a aero 7+:

Still testing, but it is a good one of course. Using a 92mm tornado with a fan controller, it only gets quiet under 3k rpm. But, now I am liking this 92mm tornado. Around 2700 or less I don't hear it. I usually use a 92mm ys tech and that still does very well.

And it fits an asus a7n8x. :) Since it doesn't bolt to the mobo, it goes on normally. But even if it bolted on, it'd still fit because the fins were trimmed.
