Gig of Ram Sweetness

A buddy of mine and I both bought a stick of Kingston 512 meg HyperX PC2700 a couple of weeks ago. He then got a MSI NForce 2 mobo and although he finally got it running with the Kingston ram it has some issues with it and he is convinced that the dual channel makes a big difference. So he decides to get rid of his ram and get something else. So I grabbed it up and now have both sticks running in dual channel mode on my Epox 8RDA+. I am sure this much ram is overkill for most all that I do on this computer but man it sure is nice how fast things seem to load and how smooth things are when I get a ton of windows open.
Now to get my hands on a Barton 2500+

Yea, a gig of ram sure is nice. I had a gig of no name stuff for quite a while, but it wasn't as good as a gig of good stuff. I have since ditched it for a dual channel 2x256 corsair TwinX DDR 400 kit, but after I buy my new mobo and processor, I'll be getting a gig of dual channel PC 3500 or higher.

it does seem to make a difference - i have a gig on my main rig at home and a gig in my office computer - it was so cheap for a while, why not - notice that with some games and with photo editing it is smoother and you can alt-tab from an online game and do other things and go back without any resource issues

I had 2 sticks of 512MB Corsair XMMS PC2700 in my machine for a while. I've since built my wife a computer and put one of the sticks in her computer. The difference from 512M - 1G wasn't that noticable IMO.

yea, you dont notice it often, but it is notacable. Welcome to the big boys with pointless toys orginization.

My brother is into audio editing, and some of the requirement for his software is 1 to 1.5 gig minimum, but he tells me that it works better with 2 gigs or more.

It seems to me it wasn't to long ago when people were saying that any more than 256 was over kill.

Times and things change. When the OS of the day was Win98 that was true. Win98 just does not know how to handle any more ram than that. Win2K and XP seem to like much more ram and know how to use it better.

I moved from an Athlon 1600+, EPoX 8K5A2+ w/768mb RAM to an Athlon 2500+, Biostar M7NCG w/1Gb PC3200 (in dual channel) and I can't tell the difference
Gone are the days when a 400MHz jump was
huge. In fact, it actually seemed like my last machine was quicker. I had been running RAID for several years (always using the onboard controllers) and so many said it's hardly noticeable with newer hard-drives (like the 120gig WD SE drive I got)...but it just seems that if I'm copying files, it actually feels like I'm copying files. Before I could be copying music/movies/whatever in the backround and still load up IE/nero/whatever game like nothin' were happening. Dunno...

I've tried both ways and both ways are of course fast. But I do notice a difference when working with photos, something I do every day. Having a gig makes working with photos faster and I don't notice any sluggishness when also browsing with 6-9 browsers open. With 512MB, things do get sluggish for me.
But, not everyone uses photo apps as often as I do and as many. I usually use 2-3 at about the same time, and that eats memory.

BF1942 runs a LOT better with 1Gig. I also suspect that HL2 will be a RAM hog.

I have a gig of ram. It's awesome!
I notice that I can work real quick with lots of windows open and photoshop runs real quick with many images open. Well worth it in my book.

i've had a gig of Corsiar XMS PC2700 for over a year now and love it. BF1942 runs so nice with a Gig

Man the longer I have this the more I am liking it. I had Photo Shop open with about a half a dozen pictures plus about 8 IE windows with my tuner card showing me Monster Garage and Photo Shop seemed smoother than when it was running by itself on 512 megs
Hey HT if that 2500+ Barton is not impressing you I would gladly trade ya my TBred 1700+
