USB 2 drive enclosures?

What's the scoop on these external hard drive enclosures? IDE to USB 2?

Is USb 2 pretty fast for large files? Like copy a 4gig avi to one? How about just capturing the video directly to the drive? Buring a DVD straight from a file on a usb 2 drive?
DO you have to install drivers or anything for windows to see the drive and use it? Is it hot swappable, like if win 2k is running and I plug in the drive will it just auto detect new drive and use it or do I have to reboot or dectect new hardware?
Does Win98se support em?
I suppose they are backwards compatible with Usb 1.1 also at reduced speeds.

Reason I am thinking about one is so I can capture video with the system that has the ATI AIW but do the editing on another system and then even burn the DVDs on a third system. If it worked well and fast enough I could be using all three system at once for what they do best. Just change the drive after capture to the editing system then to the burner system. And with 2 or 3 drives I can keep all systems working without waiting forever to transfer the files through the lan between systems. Also other things I was thinking about doing with em.

I thought about fire wire, but not everyone has that and I would like to be as portable as possible if I go that direction. Most everyone I know with a decent system does have USB 1.1 or 2, though most don't have firewire.

Also do they work well through a USB 2 hub, sort of like daisy chained. Like make an all external drive server with say 3 or 4 drive on one hub, then if I need to change systems just swap the hub to the new system and have all the drives ready to go. Would that work well?

Anyone been doing any of this or close to it?
