Not sure if it is hardware or software, but here is the problem....


On my girlfriends PC


Cel 1.1

512MB Ram

DVD-Rom

80gig Maxtor 5400

Slot Fan


She is running XP Pro


It all started with Outlook ( so we thought ) when ever she would open outlook her PC would re-boot, but then I learned that it wasn't outlook and it was just large files that were the problem.


if I was to access a large file from her PC over the network and move it, it would reboot...



I have seen this before on one other PC in the past, it was running XP Pro as well.



So I just tried to do all the Win Updates ( including SP1 ) and it din't fix the problem.



I don't wanna do a re-install, but I am almost thinking that is the only option @ this time.




Have any idea on how to fix this, if that is @ all possable?

I would have to say it is either an overheat problem or a weak power supply.

Well, I can rule out heat cause it will even do it on a fresh boot after being off for hours...



I will pull a 300w from another PC and try that to see if it works.

ok I just used a 300W PSU on that system and got the same results...



so, not heat, or the PSU that is with in that shuttle.....

What motherboard is it? Does it use VIA 4-in-1? If so, try the newest drivers. I had this problem with an old Soyo board I had.

well, it is a shuttle MB ( FV25 ), and I am really thinking it is the proc.



I took out my PIII from this rig and her PC worked fine.



so I am going to try and RMA her proc....

Stuff like that used to happen on my friends comp.. Everytime he went to play a Song it would restart.

I installed Winamp and it worked perfect..


Rule Out: Heat,PSU Or anything of that kind.

Try uninstalling Outlook? dont know if u can do that. umm reinstall it i dont know

all i know is when i installed it on his comp it worked perfect.. i dont know what to say

You SURE it's the processor? Maybe it just didn't do it that one time.

It could be a PCI IRQ sharing problem with the Network card. Classic symptom.

There are 4 IRQ channels (not the same as IRQ numbers) labelled A - D and all cards and devices that use IRQs must share them.

Some cards like some NICs and SBLive cards don't like to share.

You need to move the NIC to another free slot, then test to see if it cured the problem. If there's no free slots or you've tried them all, you'll need to start swapping cards. Keep moving it until it works.

If it persists you should try a different brand of NIC card. Also a BIOS update for the mobo wouldn't hurt if it's not running the latest one.

From those pics it looks like it's all on board stuff..

It is a VIA chipset so I'd suggest updating the drivers as well..

it is the main suspect @ this time, it would repeat the problem EVERY time with her Cel, I will try the chip set updates though in case it isn't

I would do that if I could, the has a Shuttle, there is one PCI slot and she is not even using it.


so onboard everything, Vid, Sound, NIC....

ok, updated the BIOS and installed the new 4n1 drivers... same issues....

So you positive this ain't heat?
Sounds like what the little shuttle cube did to me at the lan party!

Fresh boot from cold and it didn't take long to reboot on me. Sometimes only a few minutes!
Rebooted trying to burn a cd, move files, and getting files off the lan. Kinda a random reboot doing anything really, but it didn't have to take long to get to that point. Kinda turn it on and it would reboot about a minute after 2k loaded if I tried to do anything! Worked fine for long periods sitting idle though

With the case top off and a fan on the table blowing into the open case it never did it though, just when the case cover was on. Course it was probly hotter at the lan than in your house.
Don't know what the CPU or any specs were, it was a loaner

Also it had a fresh bare 2K Pro install.

I kinda liked the system other than the reboots, and with the cover off and extra fan I never had any reboots with it.

Sounds like a memory problem to me. Run memtest 86 on there and see if you get any errors. The reason I say this is because my comp did the exact same thing (rebooted when copying files). However, it would also randomly reboot for no other reason, but the copying files seemed to be a repeatable example. Anyways, I fixed it by lowering my ram timings in the BIOS as well as turning off one of Abit's GAT "features".
