If you read my other post looks like Supras are out, and don't work in my 2k machines either.

So what is now the best modems to buy for pci that work in 98, 2k, and anything else??

Supra would not work at all in 2k, and I had a cheapo modem (CPU Builders?) that will work but only connects about 19k! The wifes system is win 98se and running a supra that connects at 33k and above. So any modem should do at least that in my 2k systems, same phone lines and ISP!

I have a supramax that would not work in 2k or xp either. So I got an intel ham 56k and it works great in 98, 2k and xp. ;) It isn't a winmodem either.

This is the lowest price I've seen for it:

Have you bought from that site before?

I looked em over, but 2 things I wasn't sure on, what do they charge for shipping? I put 2 modems in the cart, but no shipping showed up so I started check out but never got shipping just forms wanting my info. I hate doing that untill I know what total price is.

Also I was looking into their wauntee return policy. If they ship me a bad item I am supposed to pay to ship it back to them and ALSO for them shipping me the replacement??? That kinda scares me off a little there. Get a bad item and pay shipping 3 times on it to get a good one?

Course till I came here Neweggs policy gunk pages had me scared off on them too, but I haven't had any problems and been happy buying from newegg, so maybe this place is ok too??

I read the specs for the modem, and it looks like something I might want. See if anything else gets suggested too.

I buy a lot of modems for clients (lightning capital of the US here in central FL) and I've had the best luck lately with Creative Modem Blaster modems. No install hassles, they work well on noisy lines (rural area here and a lot of people have bad lines). I have a lot of problems with Motorola and Conexant chipset modems.

Here you go - they're $19 shipped this month: http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.a ... I%20DI5652

I've never heard of that site and just found it through a search on google.

Some places will only show the shipping costs after you input your mailing info. But if they want credit info also, the heck with them. Either way, check them out at resellerratings.com.

More places probably sell them, if you can't find them then FP's suggestion may do you fine too. Seems more widely available.

*Found one here. Good company, but the model # is 562, not 563 as mine. Not sure of any differences.

I remembered I had an external Creative modem blaster V90 in the box here.

As I recall, I had trouble with the serial port sometimes being detected and sometimes not, then I would have to reboot and then I would get the port the second boot. I was pretty sure that was in 2k, but maybe it was 98se??

I just installed the modem on the Iwill xp333, and first thing out of the bag it said not 2k compatible :(
So luckily I had not yet removed the CPU builders modem and I downloaded the new drivers from creative for 2k.

Now I am online with it. 2k shows connection at 21.6k but it seems nearly as fast as the 33k or 37k connection in the 98se machine with a supra? I'll have to find a large file to download and see what I actually get.

Anyway, I geuss since I got the not 2k compatible message durring install I must not have used this in 2k, but I was pretty sure I had when I first built this system?

ANy idea if I will be having the problem of the serial port not detected sometimes durring bootup, and if so what to do about it?
I'll try to do a search though old messages too, but I don't think I solved the problem last time and that's why I put it away.

Thanks for the help, I am gonna get those other modems too, just now I don't have to hurry as I have it covered for now.
I wanted to get a modem in the kids system so she can get the tracks labeled when she rips her new disks to mp3.

Good birthday for her the 24th, I gave her a 52x liteon burner, 50 32x disks, portable MP3 cd player!
Oh ya and a new 20" flat screen TV, now she can watch the dvds I burn and tell me if they came out good :)
Man I didn't know how bad that 15 year old set was getting, still good but not nearly as crisp and clear as the new one. Those VHS/dvds I burned look great! Almost as good as the DVDs of the same movies when I have both to look at. Like Labryth, I got the DVD, VHS, and DVD-r I made.

She got too much for sure, that's whaty I gave her, the wife gave her some stuff too, but not nearly as much :)

Normally she is a my mom's durring the summer (her birthday) so she gets stuff from us, but not as much!

Anyway, back to modems. What is the problem with 2k and modems??

Supra Diamondmax does not work at all, won't even dial out or make any sounds, dial tone or nothing!

3 modems, Creative modem blaster V90 external serial, CPU Builder V90 V92 pci, and I forgot the other cheap pci modem, all work in 2k, but none connected at a decent speed!

Best I can get on 2 totally different systems both with 2k is 24k or 26k connections with any of those modems! Supra Diamond Max in the wifes biostar running 98se connects at 33k constantly and sometimes above to the same ISP on the EXACT same phone line! Only the systems and modems are different!

Also I had a 3rd 2k system I called out on with 2 of the pci modems, and it also only connected 19k- 22k.
As for the 2K systems, nothing is the same on any of them. Different boards, drives, ram, video ect...
2 are 1700xp's 1 is 2000xp. The only thing in common with the 3 2k systems is the fact they are running 2k.

Right now I have a 24k connection using a pci modem in my Iwillxp333 with 2k, I had a 36k with the wifes 98 system a few minutes ago, right before I unplugged her system to plug mine into the phone jack, so this has got to be a 2k problem somehow!
