I still use Microsoft's RegClean for Win9x and 2K (never found out if it was safe to use on XP so I haven't).

Since it's old as hell, I was wondering if anyone knows of anything better. I prefer a cleaner that errs on the safe side. I've heard of plenty like RegScrub that are too aggressive. I don't want to pooch screw a client's registry.

RegSweep? I think that's what it was called by McAfee, but it only works on W95 based systems... Don't know why.. I haven't used anything since then simply because I didn't know there was anything.. I have some 98SE boxes that could probably use a good cleaning.. eGo

Well I did some searching through the newsgroups and found the JV16.org RegCleaner highly recommended so I'm trying it out:

I little confusing to use at first, but all you really need to do for a basic registry cleaning is Tools->Registry Cleanup->Automatic Registry Cleaner

Works with all versions of Windows but Win95.

I have used Microsoft's RegClean in Win XP Pro for a long time and never had any problems with it.

MS regclean for me too in XP.

FP I have been using JV16 Powertools for a few weeks now and have no problems with it.

I use the good ole' reformat and reinstall On a more serious note, RegCleaner has always worked well for me.

SO if I clean my registry with a cleaner, does that get rid of the gunk left by programs I deleted?

Like those time lock programs? That always ticks me off! They make some change to my system that is left after deleting thier program! Not sure what or where it is, but it is there because if you ever install the program to try it again later it still says time expired!

I gave Video Studio 7 (I think) a try, it didn't work worth a hoot for me, now it's expired and after deleting everything I can find that has to do with that program, when I re-install it is still locked! So they left some type of change on my system!

Now the thing that often happens (like now) is that I had terible results with the program then, but I have made several changes to my system now. So, as gunk before I would't buy it (or even use it for free) , but now maybe it will work better? WHo knows because I can't give it a second try. But since I can capture better with new drivers and such, and in real mpg2 that is working now, then maybe Uleads program would also work as I have heard it does. It didn't for me before though

Same problem with some other programs I might like to buy, if they actually worked as claimed.

Course I can just wipe the hard drive every 30 days and start over fresh and then everything will always work (for ever), but that's sort of a pain

FP, I've NEVER used a registry cleaner, etc, etc for any of my PCs, never have in my (now) 7 yrs of PC experience.

OK, maybe I'm bad BUT why does one need to do that if one's not having any PC problems? I've steered away from all PC maintenance type programs years ago and have no probs w/o them.

BTW, STILL a Win2K guy with no plans to change.

Your registry keeps getting bigger and bigger which eventually causes a performance hit.

What I like about the one I use, Registry First Aid, is it will give you the option of compacting the regristy when it's done removing invalid entries. I could not believe the first time I ran it, because it found 600+ items that were invalid.

Normally to compact the registry, you had to save it as a TXT file and then import it back into Regedit at the DOS prompt.

Most database programs require compacting to remove wasted space. The registry is no different.

I like system mechanic now. got it just recently. does a fine job.
