It gets really hot (if you ask me) and I was just wondering can it be set to spindown or something?

Its a usb2 external box with a maxtor in it. I might be changing it to a wd cause I am probably cana go serial inside the box. :)

I'm pretty sure when your computer goes into sleep mode the hard drive turns off... however, i'm not sure if you mean when you are not using the computer or just not using the drive.

yea, when im using my rig, but not the external drive. I dont use it often. Ocasionally I pull a file or 2 off it. it is where I store all my stuff and do backup's to. So it isnt used 95% of the time the pc is on. and it gets HOT. I was thinking of just moding it to add a fan, but I dont really want to do that. it looks neet now (metal case all wavy) but if thats what I have to do, thats what I have to do.

Just unplug it?

I mean, if you hardly use it, why not keep it unplugged, and plug it in when you need to move a file to or copy a file from it?

that's what i do...i leave the usb cable attached but just unplug the power and leave it next to the drive...and plug it in when i need to use it (very infrequently).
