Question on IDE cable usage...

Ok, I'm putting my SECOND A7N8X system together right now, and I want to use my two IDE slots the best I can.

I was thinking this:

Pri Mast: Main HDD
Pri Slave: Sec CD
Sec mast: Main CD
Sec Slave: Sec HDD

However, Could I just do this:

Pri Mast: Main HDD
Pri Slave: Sec HDD
Sec mast: Main CD
Sec Slave: Sec CD

If i did that though, i would run into problems burning from one CD drive to the CDRW, wouldn't I?

Some suggestions here. :D

I have mine set up like this

Primary mater =main hdd
Primary slave= second hdd

Secondary master =CD Burner
Secondary slave= DVD drive

I copy from the DVD to the burner on the fly all the time with no problems

Either one works. People say devices on the same chain have problems being accessed at the same time but I have my DVD and CD-RW hooked together in a master and slave config and no problems doing on the fly copies.

BTW this is on a A7N8X Deluxe so I know it works :)

Ditto

I have always done this and it works, so I never change.

Ok, great. I guess we are just reaching that time when having drives on different channels really doesn't matter anymore. it did once, didn't it? :)

Thanks!

Used to be..

That way.. But MaxPC did a test on it in a recent issue disprooving the theory, it's not longer an issue.. Mix and match them how you want them. ;) eGo

My rule of thumb is to keep the HDDs on seperate EIDE ports if possible. Should provide optimal data transfer on most systems when copying from one drive to another.

I also prefer to make all HDDs Masters and all CDs slaves. Seems to be less problems that way.

If you want maximum thoughput, just get an ATA card, put the HD's on the card.
